Last year, OSU was rewarded for playing Oklahoma
No Oklahoma, no playoff bid.
This year, Oklahoma was rewarded for playing OSU. Even at 12-1, Oklahoma's computer rankings were #5. Without OSU, they probably would have dropped outside of the top ten, as wins over TCU and OKie state wouldn't cut it.
Schools don't know whether their conference schedules will carry enough weight when they are scheduling, so there is incentive to play good teams. I firmly believe that Bama was rewarded for scheduling FSU and that if they had a cupcake in that slot they would not have gotten the bid.
